In the old system you could have a different name on the cheque from the name of the supplier. For instance the company name is "City Tractor Supply" but it is locally known as "Joe's Tractor Shop" . The latter name on the cheque would not be cashable but that is how it is known.
I have a couple of suppliers that are that way - known as someone but the cheque has to read someone else to keep the bank happy.
